Catanduanes is famous for its waves; however, the province has beautiful beaches with cream-colored sand and calm glass-like waters for swimming and beach bumming. Mamangal is close to Virac, the biggest town on the island, making the beach ideal for those who want a quick getaway that’s idyllic and picturesque. Mamangal has tranquil waters, depending on the weather, and quiet surroundings. Make this your next destination before returning to Manila and after testing your mettle on the waves of Puraran.

How to Get There

Nearest Airport: Virac Airport (Catanduanes)

By Air

  1. Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines have flights from Manila to Virac, Catanduanes your jump-off point to the beaches of Mamangal.
  2. Once in Virac, you can rent a tricycle for the whole day for around P1000 to visit the attractions near Virac and the surrounding towns such as Mamangal and Marilima Beaches. You can also rent a private car for P2500 to P3000 per day.

By Land

  1. Buy a bus ticket traveling to Legazpi or Tabaco, it costs between P750 to P850 and may take up to 12 hours.
  2. The ferries that depart for Virac leave from Tabaco; the ROROs are P150 to P300 while the fast crafts cost P450.
  3. Once in Virac, you can rent a tricycle for the whole day for around P1000 to visit the attractions near Virac and the surrounding towns such as Mamangal and Marilima Beaches. You can also rent a private car for P2500 to P3000 per day.

Don’t Miss

  • Mamangal Beach contrast with the powerful waves of Puraran. Both have calm glass-like waters, depending on the season, and are perfect places for lazing on the cream-colored sand, playing beach volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, and swimming for hours.
  • The underwater scene makes it a good scuba diving site.
  • You can also include Batag Beach, Marilima Beach, and Amenia Resort during your beach hopping in this part of Catanduanes.

Don’t Forget

  • Before heading to Mamangal Beach, withdraw enough cash in Virac because there are no ATMs in the small towns near those beaches.
  • Bring food and snacks for lunch and/or merienda, if you plan to spend the whole day at the beach.
  • Bring your own gear if you want to go snorkeling or diving.
  • Leave only footprints and memories, not trash.

If You Have More Time and Budget

  • After relaxing on the beaches, you can go surfing at Puraran Beach, swim in the pool of Maribina Falls, take pictures of Bato Church, go to Binurong Point, or even go to the Caramoan Islands.
